Between Heats Selected for Static Cinema in Venice

Nicol Hockett’s photograph Between Heats, 2026 has been selected for Static Cinema, an international photography and contemporary art exhibition presented by Art-Icon in Venice, Italy, from September 3–24, 2026.

Presented at San Pietro Cantieri during the Venice International Film Festival and Venice Biennale Arte, Static Cinema explores the dialogue between photography and cinematic language. The exhibition brings together works that evoke narrative, atmosphere, memory, gesture, suspended time, and the emotional and psychological qualities associated with film.

In Between Heats, a young swimmer turns toward something beyond the frame during a pause in competition. Partially obscured by the activity surrounding her, the moment is both observational and unresolved, suggesting a story that began before the photograph and continues beyond it. The image transforms an ordinary interval between events into a moment of anticipation, drawing attention to gesture, expression, and the unseen narrative outside the frame.

The exhibition considers how a single photograph can function like a film still, preserving one instant while implying an entire sequence of events around it.
